Samuel Carter Williams was born in Pittsylvania Co., Va in 1832. Both of his parents died when he was a child and he and a surviving brother were raised by grandparents who owned a large plantation on the Banister River. After being educated, in 1850 he worked as a mercantile clerk and belonged to the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge in Danville, Virginia. On Dec. 20,1853 he married Elizabeth Ann Fallen. They had five children. Around 1855 he purchased a 998 acre tobacco plantation near Paces in SW Halifax County, VA. On May 7, 1861 he enlisted at Brooklyn as 2nd LT in Co. E, the Brooklyn Grays. This unit fought for most of the war in Allegheny Johnson's Division. He was elected Captain in May, 1862, participated in Kernstown and later was wounded in the arm at McDowell, captured, exchanged and rejoined his unit in August. He was present for duty thereafter until he was KIA, participating in Sharpsburg and all of the major ANV battles including Culp's Hill. The Battle of Mine Run, also known as Payne's Farm, or New Hope Church, or the Mine Run Campaign (November 27 ? December 2, 1863), was conducted in Orange County, Virginia, in the American Civil War.
An unsuccessful attempt of the Union Army of the Potomac to defeat the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, it was marked by false starts and low casualties and ended hostilities in the Eastern Theater for the year.

Battle of Mine Run
Mine Run Campaign
November 27 - December 2, 1863
Payne's Farm and New Hope Church were the first and heaviest clashes of the Mine Run Campaign. In late November 1863, Meade attempted to steal a march through the Wilderness and strike the right flank of the Confederate army south of the Rapidan River. Maj. Gen. Jubal A. Early in command of Ewell's Corps marched east on the Orange Turnpike to meet the advance of William French's III Corps near Payne's Farm. Carr's division (US) attacked twice. Johnson's division (CS) counterattacked but was scattered by heavy fire and broken terrain. After dark, Lee withdrew to prepared field fortifications along Mine Run. The next day the Union army closed on the Confederate position. Skirmishing was heavy, but a major attack did not materialize. Meade concluded that the Confederate line was too strong to attack and retired during the night of December 1-2, ending the winter campaign.

One anectdote:
They were orphaned as small children. Their mother died in 1832 shortly after Samuel's birth. Their father, Thomas Terry Williams remarried in 1834 to an older woman named Agnes Womack and then was killed by a slave on April 13, 1835. The loyal slaves threw his killer into a bonfire where they were burning brush at the time. The step mother disappeared from family history and they were raised and educated by their grandparents who were well to do plantation owners. Another brother, William D. Williams died in 1838 at age 14.
