"In 1738 the Council of Colonial Virginia passed an Act whereby those people who would settle the land in the southern boundary of Virginia along the Roanoke River would be free from taxes for the next 10 years. The Council felt that the settling of that part of VA would add strength and security to the Colony of VA in general. If we follow the land patent records, we find that James TERRY, Daniel TERRY, Thomas TERRY, Joseph TERRY, Henry TERRY, and their children took advantage of this opportunity, leaving the Pamunkey Neck area of VA and moved southward."

The men had to make their claims and after they received the Indents went to Charleston (SC) to collect them but often would send them in by a neighbor and hence the "Made payable to" for that was whom they sent the indent to Charleston and after 1786 to Columbia (SC) to collect the interest and indent proper...Champness Terry and for duty in the armed service in disarming the disaffected persons on Cuffytown in 1775 as a Lt., and as a private...Mrs. Sarah Terry as widow of Champness Terry placed this claim and signed before Robert Montgomery J. P. 5 Apr 1785
14 Oct 1786 Mrs Sarah Terry of Edgefield Co. makes this claim payable to Edmund Martin for collection in Charleston and sworn to before Benjamin Tutt J.

Death
Charleston SC, Will Book 1774-1779, p373, written 14 Sep 1775, no date when admitted for probate
In the name of God, I Champness Terry of the Province of South Carolina and the District of Ninety-Six, being of sound mind & memory revoking all former wills.....to my wife, Sarah, all my estate both real & personal during her widowhood or unto my children as they come of age or marriage:
First: to my daughter, Sarah Terry, the first choice.
Second: to my son, Champness Terry
Third: to my son, David Terry
Fourth: to the child my wife is now big with and if it is a boy, he is to receive and equal division, but if it be a girl, she is to receive and equal division of the personal estate.
Champness' will was filed in the South Carolina Colonial Probate Records, Volume 17, p 502, meaning he died prior to the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. He was deceased prior to his father, Joseph Terry, writing his will in Pittsylvania county VA on 4 Dec 1785 as he left Champness' heirs 236 acres of land and one Negro boy named George, who was to be sold.
Birth abt 1740 VA
Death Aft Dec 1776; 96th District, SC
Marriage abt 1770, Halifax, VA; Sarah TERRY
- [S113] History of Pittsylvania County, Maude Carter Clement.
Another instance of indentured servitude is given in the court minutes of May, 1768, when Champness Terry came into court and declared Matthew Durham and Jane his wife to be set free, although they were due him one year's service. Mr. Terry for some reason gave Durham and his wife one year of their servitude, his generosity probably being a reward for faithful duty.

to me
Comments (Search Results): Greetings, I came across your site while researching my Terry ancestors. I am trying to confirm the line extending backwards from Champness Terry Died Oct 1820 in New Orleans. On record states he married a Mary MacMillan from S Carolina.
His daughter Hannah Leah Terry (born 1815 New Orleans-d 1897) married Imla Keep (born MAss 1735, died Vicksburg 1854); and their daughter Evelyn Hamlin Keep (1839-1867 Bolton MS) married Thomas Jefferson Bolton (1821-1867) - my gr gr grandfather.
I suspect that the Terrys and the Boltons descended from older families in Virginia; but so far haven't been able to establish it.
Champness Terry is a pretty unusual name, so I"m hopeful you can help with establishing a link? I was wondering if my Champness's father might have been Champness who died in South Carolina in the 1770s.
Thank you!
